Get the party started
There’s nothing like beer and barbecue on a warm summer day. So we spoke with the experts to learn what beers go best with your sizzling summer grilling staples. “There’s a huge range of beer styles that are very complementary to grilled and barbecued foods, because the caramelization that you get from cooking those foods on the grill echoes all the caramel flavors that you have in the malt that’s used to brew the beer,” explains Lucy Saunders, author of “Grilling With Beer.”  “So there’s a huge overlap in styles that are compatible with grilled foods and barbecue.” To start, Dan Gordon, co-founder and director of brewing operations for Gordon Biersch Brewing Company, recommends a hefeweizen or Pilsener style beer. “They’re very effervescent and great for warm weather,” Gordon says. Another good option is a witbier. “It’s a refreshing beer, yet not too high in alcohol content,” Saunders says of the variety. “It won’t knock your socks off.”
